Externships and Internships

CAP encourages current law school students to apply for Fall and Spring externships and Summer internships. Work with the Capital Appeals Project demands rigorous attention to detail and creative thinking. CAP offers students a closely supervised opportunity to learn about death penalty litigation while providing a much needed service in the Deep South.

Externs and interns assist staff attorneys and investigators on active cases. The workload includes legal research and writing, issue-spotting, obtaining and digesting records, gathering statistical data, and participating in team meetings and strategy sessions. These opportunities are unpaid, but provide excellent experience particularly because resource scarcity ensures that externs and interns give critical support on urgent projects.

Applicants interested in any of the opportunities below should send a resume, a cover letter detailing their interest in capital defense work, a 5-10 page writing sample, a transcript, and a list of two or three references. If you have any questions about our internship program or are interested in applying, please contact by mail or email:
